How the stories of others inspired me
When I was fourteen, I saw a brochure about going to a high school in France for a year. After reading the first two sentences I knew it: THIS IS WHAT I WANT! I could already see myself walking at a French Lycée so it was quite a disappointment when I realised what this cool idea would cost. My mother reassured me that I would get the chance to go abroad during my studies or afterwards. And she was right...
Unfortunately for me, I was only in the second year of high school so I had to wait a little longer.
Fortunately, my computer - or rather the internet - offered a temporary solution. My Sims 2 addiction made room for a new one: reading travel blogs. By the travel blogs of strangers, I did an internship in South Africa, went to a high school in America and was au pair with an Italian family. All the stories inspired me tremendously and I couldn't wait to go abroad myself for a long time. One week after my 20th birthday, the time had come and I left my home country for Spain *excuse me, Basque Country* for five months to study.

Op mijn veertiende kwam ik een brochure tegen om een jaar naar school te gaan in Frankrijk. Na de eerste twee regels te hebben gelezen wist ik het: DIT WIL IK! Ik zag mijzelf al het volgende schooljaar rondlopen op een Frans Lycée en het was daarom nogal een domper toen ik ontdekte dat dit wel een heel duur grapje zou worden. Mijn moeder stelde mij gerust met de woorden dat ik tijdens mijn studie of daarna echt wel de kans zou krijgen om voor een lange periode naar het buitenland te gaan. And she was right…
Helaas voor mij zat ik pas in de tweede klas en moest ik dus nog even wachten.
Gelukkig bood mijn computer - of eigenlijk het internet - een tijdelijke oplossing. Mijn Sims 2 verslaving maakte plaatst voor een nieuwe: het lezen van reisblogs. Via de reisblogs van onbekenden liep ik stage in Zuid-Afrika, ging ik naar een high school in Amerika en was ik au pair bij een Italiaans gezin. Alle verhalen inspireerde mij enorm en ik kon niet wachten om zelf voor een lange tijd naar het buitenland te gaan. Een week na mijn 20e verjaardag was het zover en vertrok ik voor vijf maanden naar Spanje * excuses, Baskenland* om daar een semester te studeren.
