Apoio extraordinário - 125 euros from the Portuguese government

In September, it was announced that the Portuguese government would give a €125 to residents in Portugal due to inflation. Families would also receive an amount of 50 euros per child living at home. There was confusion for many people, including myself; would it be only for residents in Portugal with Portuguese nationality or also for residents without Portuguese nationality? By now, we know more! The government has even started paying for it. In this article, I'll tell you more about it!
Good news! Even those who do not (yet) have the Portuguese nationality are entitled to it! However, there are some conditions such as:
- Your gross income is maximum 2.700 per month / 37.800 per year;
- You live in Portugal;
- You have filed the tax return for the year 2021.
In addition, there are some exceptions that may prevent you from being entitled to this amount, such as if you receive a pension from abroad.
The €125,00 can be paid out by two different ´organisations´:
In most cases, you´ll get the amount from AT. If you get benefits, it will be send by the Segurança Social.
You don´t need to apply for the amount yourself because you are already in the system of the Social Security/Tax Office. However, it is important that your IBAN is in the system. I´ll explain to you how to see if you are entitled to this and how to add/change your IBAN.

1. Go to the Portal das Finanças website (https://www.portaldasfinancas.gov.pt) and log in with your NIF and password.
2. In the search bar, type:
apoio extraordinário
(extraordinary support). You will see a number of search results. Then click on
aceder;
3. You´ll see an overview of your earned gross annual salary. The sentence ´Total de Apoio Atribuído pela AT´ means the total amount of money granted to you by the AT. You can also see the status here (under situação). The possible statuses are:
Add /modify your IBAN
Perhaps your IBAN is not (correctly) in the system. Furtunately it´s very easy to change your IBAN:
1. Type in the search bar: IBAN
2. Click on alterar IBAN
3. Add your IBAN and click on

Receiving the €125 via Segurança Social ontvangen
In case you receive benefits.
1. Go to the Segurança Social direta website and log in with your social security number and password.
2. Go to Posição atual (current situation) and click on Valores a receber. If you are entitled to the €125 by the social security, you will also see Apoio Extraordinário efeitos inflação here.
3. Always check if your IBAN is still correct!
If you have not yet added an IBAN or you have a new one, you can change it by going to Perfil à conta bancária.
When can I expect the money?
Since Thursday 20 October, the government started paying via Portal das finanças and since Monday 24 October also via Segurança Social Direta. Everyone is expected to have the amount in their account by the end of October! Only if the bank details are correct, of course!

Opening a Portuguese bank account is probably not something you will do immediately when arriving in Portugal.
